About Our Lodge
Gruene Outfitters on the Arroyo is South Texas premier saltwater fly fishing lodge. We are located 6 miles inland on the Arroyo Colorado midway between Port Mansfield and Port Isabel, Texas. The Arroyo originates near Harlingen and meanders its way to the Lower Laguna Madre, passing by a long row of docks and fishing cabins known as Arroyo City. This quaint, protected harbor is the perfect starting point to reach the richest, most productive flats the Texas Gulf Coast has to offer. We work with the most experienced and friendliest saltwater fly fishing guides, taking anglers to clear, shallow water flats in search of the elusive and hard fighting Redfish. This setting is perfect for fishing buddies or a company outing. Delicious meals, fine wine and drinks, and daily housekeeping will top off your stay. The facility accommodates up to 8 fishermen, two to a room, each having its own full bath. Our waterfront location offers a large private pier and lights for nighttime fishing. The interior was 100% remodeled in 2001 with tile floors, pine ceilings, large walk-in showers, and a complete modern kitchen. A 9 foot dining table makes for lodge style dining each morning and evening.
About The Fishing
The Lower Laguna Madre offers anglers some of the finest shallow, clear water sight casting on the Texas Coast. Redfish is the primary target, but significant numbers of Speckled Trout, Black Drum, and Flounder roam the flats almost year round. Migrating Tarpon are present near offshore each Fall with limited trips available and conditions permitting. Smaller Tarpon and Snook reside in the Arroyo and offer anglers an occasional change of pace. Tailing redfish are typically the early morning targets. As the sun rises, your chances of spotting cruising fish improve, making a saltwater fly fishing dream come true. On days with poor conditions, or for non fly fishermen in the group, we offer light spin fishing with artificial baits.
Travel Planning
Arroyo City is located only 20 miles from the Harlingen or Cameron County Airports. We will transfer all guests from either airport to the lodge and back as part of your package. Southwest and Continental Airlines offer regular service to Harlingen. By vehicle, the lodge is approximately 4 1/2 hours from San Antonio. Plan to arrive at our lodge after 4 PM on the first day and depart late afternoon on the last day of fishing. Guests travelling long distances can arrange to stay an extra night for AM flight departures. The General Aviation portion at Harlingen accommodates almost any type of private plane.
